Printed below the inset image: "Entered According to Act of Congress in the Year 1855 by J. H. Colton & Co. in the Clerks Office of the District Court for the Southern District of New York." G. Woolworth Colton, Colton's General Atlas, Containing One Hundred and Seventy Steel Plate Maps and Plans, on One Hundred Imperial Folio Sheets (New York: J. H. Colton & Company, No. 172 William Street; London: Trubner & Company, No. 12 Paternoster Row, 1857) was "entered according to Act of Congress, in the year One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty-six, by J. H. Colton & Company, In the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the United States for the Southern District or the State of New York." This book includes the same "Delaware and Maryland. District of Columbia" on page 24, whereas the Athenaeum's copy is not numbered. The two maps are identical except for the Athenaeum's copy includes an extra geometric border surrounding the edge. The Athenaeum's copy also includes a different title. The Free Library's copy reads: "Delaware and Maryland, Published by J. H. Colton & Company, No. 172 William St. New York" This map is probably from Johnson's New Illustrated (Steel Plate) Family Atlas, With Descriptions, Geographical, Statistical, and Historical compiled by J. H. Colton and Alvin Jewitt Johnson and published by Johnson and Browning, of Richmond, Virginia. "Although a number of maps in the atlas duplicate those used in Colton publications, the decorative borders are of a different design." (325). Editions of the Family Atlas were published to 1885, and after that the Colton name was dropped from the title page.

Proposal to provide drinking water from the Schuylkill River above Norristown to the City of Philadelphia. The plan proposed to use the storage capacity of the river's dams and the canals of the Schuylkill Navigation Company to ensure an adequate supply of water. The plan was never implemented.

The proposal includes a textual description of the plan, detailed maps of the entire Schuylkill River watershed, plans for the aqueduct and gate houses, designed by Philadelphia architect Frank Furness, and plans of the Schuylkill Navigation Co.'s canals, locks and dams from Tumbling Run to Norristown.

Map shows the location and sizes of water distribution pipes from the Fairmount Water Works to Philadelphia and parts of Moyamensing and Southwark. Also noted are the location of each of the 1,015 fire hydrants in the system. Water supply plan which accompanied a petition from manufacturers in Manayunk along the Schuylkill River, who wanted to continue polluting the river with their factory wastes, and suggested an alternative water supply for the Philadelphia that would allow them to do this. The plan was not adopted, and the City continued, with varied success, to protect the water supply at Fairmount from manufacturing pollution. As with many old plans folded into the Water Department’s bound reports, this one was in pieces (with some parts missing) and needed major repairs before scanning. 2004.057.0063h

These streams were of interest to the Philadelphia Water Department as it searched for a purer water supply for the city. The green area on the map shows the Perkiomen Creek watershed, of special interest in this time period. Many alternative water supplies were examined by the city from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century, but the original system, which still draws water from the city’s two rivers, was never abandoned. 2004.057.0085

This map of Philadelphia was created by J.M. Brewer in 1934. Brewer had a company called Property Services, Inc. that provided information about real estate conditions, presumably to local lenders, realtors, and appraisers. There are no records about the method Brewer used to collect the data other than the note at the bottom of the map legend: "All location ratings and racial concentration quotes are the opinion only of J.M. Brewer after careful investigation of the location." Brewer served at one time as chief appraiser in Philadelphia for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. Met Life was among the biggest mortgage lenders in Philadelphia during the 1940s. Brewer also served as a map consultant to Home Owners' Loan Corporation (HOLC) and helped create the 1937 security map for Philadelphia. No doubt Brewer used this 1934 map and the data collected to create it in his work with HOLC. This map provides evidence that people outside of the federal government were making maps similar to the ones created by the HOLC even before HOLC began its City Survey in 1935.
